Our Mission

Supporting Mental Health For All

Our mission is to create a safe and supportive environment for individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses, especially when more traditional services aren’t available.

Over the years, our organization has expanded its reach and resources, enabled us to proudly serve the entire Sedgwick County community with a range of supportive services, activities, and events designed to promote mental health and independence.

Our History

Founded in 1993 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Project Independence began with a small group of dedicated peers who came together in Wichita, KS, to offer each other support and solidarity in navigating their mental health journeys.

What started as a modest gathering quickly grew in size and scope, driven by the shared commitment to provide a safe space for individuals dealing with severe and persistent mental illnesses.

“Project calls to the life in people. Sometimes people come here who are really sick. We try to find the flame of life in them and encourage it to grow”
